In 2010, the Austrian Composers Association and the International Gustav Mahler Society held a composition competition in celebrating the sesquicentennial of Mahler’s birth. Viennese musicians Wolfgang David, Yushan Li, Wolfgang Panhofer, and Christopher Devine were asked to rehearse and assess 200 submitted works for piano quartet.

This inspiring and productive collaboration has led the four instrumentalists to establish themselves as an ensemble focused on both traditional and contemporary works.

The newly-formed Gustav Mahler Piano Quartet debuted at Carinthian Summer, one of Austria’s most famous festivals of music. This concert was broadcast live on ORF, the Austrian Public Radio Station.

Soon afterwards, the young ensemble performed at the prestigious “Gustav Mahler Music Weeks” in Toblach, Italy, and was immediately re-invited for the following year.

Several concert tours ensued, for example to Germany and Russia. In 2015, engagements in Italy (Rome and Milan), and Colombia (Bogotá and Medellín) were on the program. In 2016 the Gustav Mahler Piano Quartet performed at the International Haydndays in Eisenstadt.
